Oil pulling is an Ayurvedic practice that has been used for many years. It involves swishing oil in your mouth. Swishing oil in your mouth helps to promote oral health and removes bacteria. Some types of oils may actually contain properties to help reduce inflammation, moisturize your gums, increase saliva production, and in return reducing bacteria in your mouth. Types of oils that can be used for oil pulling are coconut, sesame, and/or olive oil.

To oil pull, choose the oil of your choice. Measure out about one tablespoon of your choice of oil and swish it in your mouth for about 15-20 minutes. Try not to swallow the oil! Once you are finished, spit out the oil into the trash. Avoid spitting it out into your sink and/or toilet, as this may cause oil build up, which can lead to clogging. Rinse with salt water, then proceed to your regular oral hygiene routine.

For best results, studies suggest to oil pull first thing in the morning, on an empty stomach.
